What is the difference between a chiropractor and physiotherapist?

Chiropractors and physiotherapists are two separate regulated professions in Malaysia with different training pathways, diagnostic tools, and treatment philosophies, though both address musculoskeletal and movement disorders.

In Malaysia, chiropractors and physiotherapists operate within separate regulatory frameworks and scope of practice. Chiropractors are trained to diagnose and treat disorders of the spine and musculoskeletal system, with an emphasis on spinal alignment and nerve function. Their training focuses on manual adjustment techniques, particularly spinal manipulation, and they often use X-ray imaging as part of their diagnostic approach. Physiotherapists, by contrast, hold credentials regulated by the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council and focus on restoring movement, function, and strength through exercise, manual therapy, and physical modalities.

The core difference lies in philosophy and method. Chiropractors typically work from a model centered on vertebral subluxation and nervous system interference, whereas physiotherapists use evidence-based rehabilitation grounded in anatomy, biomechanics, and exercise science. In practice, a physiotherapist may prescribe targeted stretching and strengthening routines for a knee injury or post-operative recovery, while a chiropractor may perform spinal adjustments for related postural issues. Both professions treat conditions like back pain and neck strain, but through distinct modalities. In Klang Valley and across Malaysia, both practitioners operate under their respective professional bodies and may work independently or within clinics. Understanding this distinction helps patients choose the approach that aligns with their condition and treatment preference.
