What is the flexion-distraction technique?

Flexion-distraction is a low-force chiropractic method using a specialized motorized table to gently stretch and decompress the spine, targeting disc problems and nerve compression without forceful adjustments.

The flexion-distraction technique employs a motorized treatment table that slowly flexes and extends the spine under controlled conditions. Rather than delivering a sudden thrust like a manual adjustment, the table applies gentle, rhythmic traction to create space between vertebrae and reduce pressure on intervertebral discs and nerve roots. A chiropractor guides the patient through a series of positions while the table does the mechanical work, allowing the spine to decompress gradually.

This method addresses several spinal conditions where nerve compression or disc displacement is the primary problem. It is commonly used for disc herniation, sciatica (pain radiating down the leg from nerve irritation), and spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal). The technique aims to retract bulging or protruding discs and relieve pressure on affected nerves, often reducing pain and improving function without the force associated with thrust techniques.

What distinguishes flexion-distraction from manual adjustments is its mechanical precision and lower force delivery. Patients who cannot tolerate high-velocity adjustments, those with severe disc pathology, or individuals recovering from spinal injury may find this approach more suitable. The technique has been used in chiropractic practice for decades and remains a standard option in clinics across the Klang Valley. Practitioners select this method based on patient presentation and imaging findings, often combining it with other care approaches.
