What is myofascial release?

Myofascial release is a manual soft tissue therapy that applies sustained pressure to areas of fascia restriction to restore normal tissue mobility and reduce pain.

Myofascial release addresses tightness in the fascia, the connective tissue layer that surrounds muscles, bones, and organs throughout the body. When fascia becomes restricted due to injury, poor posture, or repetitive strain, it can limit movement and create pain patterns that extend far from the original problem site.

The technique is performed by hand, using sustained pressure or slow stretching movements applied directly to restricted fascia. A practitioner works through the tissue layers to identify and release adhesions or trigger points that block normal movement. The pressure is held until the tissue softens and lengthens, which typically takes several seconds to a minute per area. Clients may experience some initial discomfort that resolves as the restriction releases.

Myofascial release works well alongside spinal adjustments. Where an adjustment restores joint alignment and nerve function, myofascial work addresses the soft tissue holding patterns that can pull joints out of position. Together, they help restore both structural alignment and tissue mobility. This combination is common in chiropractic practice across the Klang Valley, where practitioners use it to treat neck tension, lower back pain, and movement restrictions from desk work or athletics.

Unlike massage focused on relaxation, myofascial release targets specific problem areas and aims for lasting changes in tissue quality and function.
