What is sciatica?

Sciatica is pain radiating along the sciatic nerve, typically caused by compression or irritation of the nerve root in the lower spine.

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the human body, becomes compressed or irritated. The pain typically radiates from the lower back through the buttocks and down one leg, sometimes reaching the foot. Sufferers often describe sharp, burning, or electric sensations rather than dull aching pain.

Common causes include herniated discs, bone spurs, piriformis syndrome (where muscles in the buttocks irritate the nerve), and misalignments in the lumbar spine. Pregnancy, prolonged sitting, and muscle tightness in the lower back and hip region can also trigger or worsen symptoms. The pain may be mild or severe enough to interfere with daily activities and sleep.

Chiropractors treat sciatica by identifying the source of nerve compression through assessment and imaging. Treatment often involves spinal adjustments to correct misalignments, targeted exercises to improve mobility and strength, and postural advice to prevent recurrence. Many patients seek chiropractic care because sciatica causes functional limitations that other treatments have not resolved. Finding a provider experienced in sciatica and disc rehabilitation can help determine whether your symptoms stem from spinal mechanics that respond to manual care.
