What is trigger point therapy?

Trigger point therapy is a treatment technique that applies sustained pressure to tight, irritated spots within muscle tissue to relieve pain and restore normal function.

Trigger points are localized areas of muscle tightness that form when muscle fibers remain partially contracted. These taut knots can develop from poor posture, repetitive strain, injury, or stress and often refer pain to other parts of the body, sometimes miles away from the trigger point itself. For example, a trigger point in the neck muscles might cause headaches or radiating arm pain.

Trigger point therapy works by applying direct, sustained pressure to these knots using fingers, knuckles, or specialized tools. The pressure relaxes the contracted muscle fibers, increases blood flow to the area, and breaks the pain cycle that keeps the muscle locked. The goal is to restore the muscle to its normal resting length and allow it to function properly again.

This therapy pairs naturally with chiropractic care, since both address musculoskeletal pain and restriction. A chiropractor may identify trigger points contributing to your symptoms and use trigger point techniques alongside spinal adjustment to improve outcomes. The therapy is common in Klang Valley clinics that offer soft-tissue work alongside bone and joint care.

Results often include reduced muscle stiffness, improved range of motion, and relief from referred pain. For those with chronic muscle tension or pain that seems unrelated to spine issues, trigger point therapy offers a focused way to address the muscle tissue itself.
