Postnatal chiropractic care for new mothers

Prenatal chiropractic care and postnatal care are different jobs even though they sit under the same specialty. Prenatal work is about accommodating a growing bump and shifting balance. Postnatal care deals with a different set of issues: pelvic instability after delivery, upper back and neck strain from feeding and carrying a newborn, and core and pelvic floor changes.

Clinics offering postnatal-specific care usually adjust their techniques and positioning for a body that has just gone through delivery (vaginal or C-section) and take a history that includes the birth itself, not just current symptoms. This is separate from a standard adult back or neck consultation.

Timing matters: many practitioners want clearance from your OB or midwife before hands-on treatment, especially after a C-section or a complicated delivery.

What it costs

Postnatal visits are typically priced similarly to standard consultations, though a first visit may run longer to cover birth history and current symptoms. Clinics that combine chiropractic with postnatal massage or pelvic floor referral may price these as separate line items.

FAQ

How soon after giving birth can I see a chiropractor?
This depends on your delivery and recovery. Many practitioners recommend getting clearance from your OB or midwife first, particularly after a C-section, before starting hands-on treatment.
Is postnatal chiropractic different from a normal back pain visit?
Yes. It accounts for pelvic and core changes from pregnancy and delivery, and posture strain from feeding and carrying a baby, which a general back pain visit doesn't specifically address.
